AI in Photos

The latest version of Photoshop (2024) includes a new tool and task bar.  The Generative Fill tool.  This tool seems unassuming but has the power to completely change how retouching is done.

On a recent project I photographed a spray bottle with a hand.  My client decided they wanted a different hand so instead of a reshoot and hiring a model I decided to test out the Generative Fill tool.  After selecting the hand I asked the tool to replace it with a female hand.  A few seconds later the tool added a layer with the new hand and offered three options for the change.  I selected an appropriate hand and closely inspected it.  It wasn’t perfect but after I cleaned up some artifacts and did some repair work on the fingernails it was acceptable.  It was being used on their website so the low resolution version looked pretty good. The client was thrilled and I saved them a ton of time and money.
